There is one belief that has quietly guided much of my life.
Not because I’ve always understood it, but because I’ve watched it reveal itself again and again.
Everything happens for us.
I know that idea can be difficult to embrace, especially in the middle of disappointment, heartbreak, uncertainty, or loss. In those moments, the last thing we want is someone telling us there’s a reason for our pain. Sometimes all we can do is take the next breath, trust the next step, and allow ourselves to simply be where we are.
For me, believing that life happens for us has never meant pretending that difficult experiences don’t hurt. It doesn’t mean rushing toward gratitude or trying to find the lesson before we’re ready. It simply means trusting that there may be more unfolding than I can see in the moment.
Looking back over my life, I’ve noticed something remarkable. Many of the experiences I once resisted became the very experiences that shaped me. The unexpected detours introduced new opportunities. The closed doors redirected me toward better ones. The seasons that felt the heaviest quietly expanded my resilience, compassion, courage, and trust. None of that was obvious while I was living it.
Time has a beautiful way of widening our perspective. What once felt like an ending often becomes the beginning of something we couldn’t have imagined. The experiences we would never have chosen sometimes become the ones that help us grow into the person we were always becoming. Often, we don’t recognize the gift until years later.
Today, I don’t expect to understand every challenge while I’m living it. Instead, I try to meet life with curiosity and trust. I remind myself that I don’t yet know the whole story. And more often than not, when I look back, I discover that life wasn’t happening to me at all—it was quietly happening for me.
